Description

This magazine cover is about China’s solidarity with the peoples of less developed countries. By 1960, China and the Soviet Union were vying for support among what was then called the 'Third World' (Asia, Africa and Latin America), each presenting itself as a model for communist development. Both China and the USSR stood against America, the leader of the 'First World.' Here Chairman Mao is in the centre of a multi-racial, multi-national group, promoting international friendship and solidarity. The cover re-produced a painting entitled 'Chairman Mao Standing with People of Asia, Africa and Latin America'. Paintings were often re-produced as posters, prints and magazine illustrations.
