- Description
This 1969 badge depicts Mao in front of a number of important sites from revolutionary history: Jinggangshan (represented by the mountain), Yan’an (represented by the pagoda on the hill) and Tian’anmen rostrum. Below Mao is a red bar with the dates 1921-1969. 1921 is when the CCP was founded; 1969 is when the party held its 9th Party Congress. The plum blossom in the foreground is a traditional symbol of perseverance and the ability to survive hardship. The inscription on the reverse is in Lin Biao’s calligraphy. Lin Biao was appointed Mao’s successor at the 9th Party Congress (although he was to die two years later in an alleged coup attempt).
