'Descendant of Qiu Jin (1874-1907) - Wang Yanhua, daughter of 'China’s first woman pilot' Wang Canzhi, visits East China Normal University.

Recently, Ms Wang Yanhua and her husband Xu De, who have lived in the United States for many years, visited East China Normal University accompanied by Dong Bo, the Vice Chairman of the Shanghai branch of the Chinese Kuomintang Revolutionary Committee and Ma Lingde, Liaison Department Section Chief, and others. Fang Qihua, Chair of the university’s United Front Work Department, and Fang Xiaoyi, Head of the university Archives, were among those who received them and participated in the informal discussion.

Wang Yanhua is Qiu Jin’s granddaughter. Her mother Wang Canzhi matriculated at Daxia University [the predecessor of East China Normal University] in September 1927. Thereafter she went to America to study aeronautics at New York University. In 1931 having completed course work, she returned to China and was acclaimed 'China’s First Airplane Pilot.' This is the centennial of the Xinhai Revolution. Recently after completing a visit to Taiwan and at the invitation of the Shanghai Chinese Kuomintang Revolutionary Committee, Wang Yanhua participated in commemorative activities. At that time she learned of the discovery of her mother’s registration in the Archives of East China Normal University. She was delighted; through the Shanghai Chinese Kuomintang Revolutionary Committee, a visit to the university was immediately arranged.

Zhu Xiaoyi explained to Wang Yanhua the discovery of Wang Canzhi’s registration in the archival materials and her course of study at Daxia University. At the same time they presented to Wang Yanhua a facsimile of Wang Canzhi’s registration forms and a commemorative album. Dong Bo and Fang Qihua expressed their hope of strengthening contacts and cooperation between alumni in Taiwan and China. Wang Yanhua expressed thanks to the university Archives for carefully preserving her mother’s materials; she also expressed the hope that in the future she can cooperate with the university Archives in organizing her mother’s materials to allow more people to understand more fully her mother’s extraordinary life. These authentic and vivid sources should be made available to advance patriotism and foster a spirit of self-improvement among young people.'
